“What’s Happening in…Montenegro: New President, New Hopes?”
A political era has come to an end in Montenegro: President Milo Ðukanović has lost the 2023 presidential elections, after more than thirty years in power. His 37-year-old successor, Jakov Milatović, based his campaign on the promise to fight corruption and to reinvigorate the stalled EU-accession process of Montenegro. However, as a rather new figure on the political scene, Milatović, an Oxford-educated economist and former minister of economy, along with his party "Evropa sad!" (Europe now), is hardly known – both domestically and internationally.
The online discussion will therefore address the following key questions: what is to be expected from the new president and his political movement? What are the prospects for the Parliamentary elections in June? What does his election mean for Montenegro’s EU accession and for relations with Serbia and other Western Balkan countries?
