Kosova in Berlin: Second Edition - 2025: Post-War Cinema in Kosovo
Dr. Jeta Abazi-Gashi, University of Prishtina
Over the past decade, Kosovo's film industry has played an increasingly significant role in shaping the memory and constructing discourses about national identity. Post-war films engage with the country’s past, particularly the war of the 1990s and its aftermath, while also reflecting contemporary struggles and aspirations.
This paper adopts a sociological approach to explore how Kosovar films function as sites of memory construction.
By analyzing Kosovo’s post-war films and incorporating interviews with Kosovar filmmakers, this study investigates the role of filmmakers in curating memory—whether by amplifying collective experiences, introducing counter-memories, or crafting new frameworks for understanding Kosovo’s evolving identities.
